Brief History & Milestones

23rd December, 1990, marked a historic day for Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Colombo 07, where the “Guruge Hall” was adorned with past Sirimavians for the inaugural meeting to set up the school’s Old Girls’ Association. Setting up an OGA when the school was merely 17 years old has indeed assisted in uplifting Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya to claim its current reputation as one of the leading schools in Sri Lanka. Subsequent to the above meeting, the OGA was officially established in 1991 under the guidance of then principal, Mrs. R. M. L. Jayasekera, with the aim of providing a platform for past students to network and work towards the betterment of the alma mater. The 1991 inaugural committee was presided by Sujeewi Samaranayake, followed by Geetha Munasinghe as Secretary and Mallika Jayawardena as Treasurer.

The OGA established with humble beginnings back in 1991, has reached the current state of glory with the continuous leadership and direction of past principals- Miss. Wimala Liyanage, Mrs. R. M. L. Jayasekera, Ms. W. P. N. De Silva, Mrs. P. M. Kalubowila, as well as the current principal, Mrs. R.A.M.R Herath and tremendous efforts of all her members and the past committees. 

During this journey, the OGA was able to achieve some of her milestones as well:

  1. Creation of the OGA constitution
  2. Donating a van (2003) with the help of funds collected through savings and Bathiya and Santhush Concert held in 2003 at the Viharamahadevi Open Air Theatre.

  3. Introducing the world renowned 5-S concept to the school (2004) and implementation of same throughout the school premises.

  4. In line with the 2010 Childrens’ Day celebrations, the OGA was able to donate a brand new 29-seater bus for school use, mainly as a result of the financial stronghold created by successful projects conducted between the period from 2004 to 2010.

  5. In 2010, the completed ground-floor units inclusive of a main library, primary library, OGA Office, dental and sick room, as a part of a three-story library complex was handed over to the school.

  6. Opening of the school sports complex and fully equipped first-aid room in 2018, where the OGA contribution from past committees amounted to more than 10 million Sri Lankan Rupees for the building. Many equipment were also provided for sports such as basketball, netball, table tennis, squash, chess and carrom.
